Today the class was allowed a free day to explore Auckland. Because the city is so big, the professors outlined important locations around the city in the form of a scavenger hunt. Each site was given a score and at the end of the day teams of 3-4 added their points to see who explored most of the city. The scavenger hunt helped us experience all the city has to offer. Some of the most memorable sites were Silo Park, Viaduct basin, Auckland University, and Giapo Gelato shop. Silo Park is an old industrial area that the city turned into an urban park. We felt as a group that even though it was an industrial area to see it was awesome that the city was able to turn it into art. Viaduct Basin was also cool because of all the sail boats we saw, especially since Auckland is known as the city of sails. The basin was full of magnificent boats of all types and sizes as well as a Maritime Museum. My personal favorite spot we visited was Giapo Gelato. The Gelato there was so good and the atmosphere of the restaurant was amazing. We were greeted with samples of all the flavors and a complementary water.
The scavenger hunt was an amazing way to help the students really experience all the Auckland had to offer and I would say that for my group, it was successful. As the award for acquiring the most points, Dr. Moerke and Dr. Berchem bought the winning teams dinner in Queenstown. The trip was worth the rushing around because we were exposed to so much in the city of Auckland!
