For a late night surprise our host, Ken, took us beach seining along the east side of the island. Ken told us that in the past student groups had pulled in trumpet fish, puffer fish, and even a potted eagle ray in their seines, but our experience was different. Due to the blooming sargasm algae the beach is covered in decaying organic matter and the fish aren’t able to come in as close to the beach as thy had before. All we caught during our late night excursion were a couple snappers, a blue crab, and a ghost crab on shore. It may not have been a big catch but we had fun in the water and were able to work as a team while pulling the net in.
